Volvo invented the three-point seat belt in 1959 and gave the patent away. That decision encapsulates Swedish automotive philosophy: every advance in safety belongs to the entire industry. Volvo and Saab (until 2011) defined a national style — boxy, durable, supremely safe estate cars built for Scandinavian winters. Polestar, spun out of Volvo in 2017, is one of the few brands building dedicated electric performance cars. The signature shape is the long estate.
